an illustrated tale Page 1 |
A rush of cool air washed over
his face as Garadaine ran into the light of day and out of the cave. Before
him stood the great beast that had been attacking them, a huge dragon, covered
in horns, spikes and claws. Garadaine had had a great amount of experience
with dragons now, but none of the ones he had come across had been this large
or frightening. Glancing at the disproportional size of the beasts
paws, he could also tell that this dragon had a long way to go before it
reached full size. Regardless of the dragon's age, however, Garadaine
knew all dragons were exceptionally intelligent, so outsmarting or defeating
this goliath would not be an easy task.
But so far the plan was working. Garadaine and Rillik were both to run out of the cave's small entrance and draw the dragon's attention away from the cave and the others still inside. Masark and Trenial would escape next, with Gartgnar and Cassrien firing their weapons to further confuse the creature. Hopefully, but the end of it all, the six travelers would have escaped into the nearby forest and to safety. "Over here, tall, dark and ugly!" Rillik shouted, running after Garadaine. The dragon roared and snapped at the corsair, causing him to sidestep and almost trip on the large decorative stones on the ground.
"No! Over here!" Garadaine
shouted, running towards the forest, swinging his swords quickly.
The dragon turned sharply and roared angrily at the small knight. A
knot grew in Garadaine's stomach as the dragon raised it's enormous hand
and began reaching for him. He raised his swords quickly to defend
himself, but he doubted at just what sort of defense he could put up against
such a huge beast.
Suddenly the dragon reared up
and gave a loud scream of pain. Garadaine glanced over to the other
side of the creature and saw Rillik's sword glance off the beast's other
hand. His attack had been strong enough to break a scale or two and
slice flesh, but the wound was nowhere near serious. By now Trenial
and Masark had started their run for freedom, but the slower Trenial began
to impede Masark, who was forced to slow down until he could pass the paladin.
