Days 1 through 3
On Saturday, October 13, late evening, Volldai landed on the Misty
Isle.
He spent the night where he landed, making a
small fire and calming his pet dragon. The noises from within the forest
began to spook the beast.
"Easy now," Volldai said softly, in his best, soothing
voice. Volldai never did have a taste for kindness, but he couldn't afford
to lose his dragon. It was his ticket home. The two settled
down for an uneasy night's sleep.
In the morning Volldai awoke to find his pet dragon
high in the branches of a nearby tree, obviously spooked by something.
"Come down here, blast you!" Volldai demanded.
The frightened creature just stayed where it was, shaking. "Stupid
dragon. Very well, but stay! You hear me? STAY! I'm
not going to be stuck on this bloody island if you fly away! I will
hunt you down! AGAIN!"
Volldai shook his head slowly and gathered up his
weaponry. The sun was already shining down upon him harshly, and
the moisture of the surroundings weren't making things any more comfortable.
Just the way he liked it.
He hiked all day, following a large valley that was
engulfed by the forest. Strange, he thought, there were
no creatures to be seen. No insects, no birds, nothing that he could
spot. Either there were no creatures here in this lush forest, or
they were all wise to his presence. Volldai voted for the second option.
As he made his way further and further into the valley, his weaponry and
armor became heavier and heavier, something that was all too familiar for
the battle hardened warrior. Traveling under adverse conditions was
not something that Volldai wasn't accustomed too.
By night fall, Volldai had guessed he had traveled
about half way into the peninsula, toward the mist. Tomorrow, he thought,
as he lit a fire, he would reach the mist. Perhaps then he would
find something to conquer. So far, however, it was nothing but forest,
and rather boring for the knight. He had gathered some fruit from
the forest along his journey, and now, with his boot knife, was dissecting
them, moving them over the fire, smelling them, feeling them, testing to
see if they were edible. Most of them seemed safe enough, though tasted
horrible. Volldai chuckled softly to himself as he settled in for
another night's sleep on the island. "Just like mother used to make..."
It was morning. The third day on the island.
Volldai awoke to find one of his smaller knives missing. It was of
little consequence, he had three more on his person, but losing a weapon,
even a small knife, was NOT something Volldai did, ever. Someone had
visited him, and looted him, during the night. No matter, Volldai thought,
"I'll rip it out of him when I meet him again."
Volldai gathered up his equipment and journeyed onward,
into the dense forest. The farther and farther he walked, the slower
and slower his progress became. But he was not one to give up.
By mid day, he had found himself in a small clearing. In the center
stood a large, bush like tree. It's leaves were huge, and surrounded
the trunk like a skirt, making the whole tree look much like a large gumdrop.
Volldai slowly advanced to the odd looking plant, and lightly poked it
with his sword. The leaves softly swayed to the touch of the metal
implement, and made soft rustle.
Suddenly a huge vine shot out from behind the leaves
and wrapped itself around Volldai's ankles. The knight quickly slashed
at it with his sword, severing it from the plant. He pushed the wrapped
vine off of his legs and watched it wiggle on the ground before him, dripping
a purple colored liquid. A second vine shot out from behind the leaves,
but Volldai was ready this time. He swung his sword left and right,
dicing the vine into small slices. Another vine shot out, and another,
each dispatched quickly by the knight.
Volldai quickly made his way to the edge of the clearing.
"I see why nothing grows near that thing," Volldai thought, "At least I
know to avoid those things from now on."
The sun began to set as Volldai slowly climbed up
a tree to get a better look around. As his head cleared the forest
canopy, he could see the wall of mist not a half mile before him.
It looked extremely dense, and too think to see through. Not even
the sunlight from the setting sun could penetrate it, and as the sun dived
into the western sea, its light was devoured by the mist, making things
seem all the more dark.
Climbing down the tree trunk, Volldai began to gather
wood to make a fire. After creating a much bigger fire than the other
two, he began gathering rocks to set around the bonfire. Using the
last remaining light from the sun, and the distant flicker from his flame,
Volldai gathered some large leaves and branches, and began making a primitive
tent.
"Looks like I'll have to stay here till that mist
clears..." Volldai said to himself, with a small air of disgust.
Sitting down against the nearby tree he had climbed before, Volldai began
to clean his weapons. The purple gunk left by the vine slinging tree, or
'Slinger' as Volldai had nicknamed them, left an odd smelling powder on his
sword. Volldai decided he should keep the powder to test later, it
could come in handy. Opening up a small, empty leather pouch, and turning
it inside out, Volldai wiped down his sword, pinching the powder into the
leather, and then capturing it inside. As he began to cook some of
the red and
orange fruit he had picked up earlier, the only type that tasted good
enough to eat again, a small lizard began to crawl down the trunk of the
tree on which Volldai rested against. Volldai turned and looked the
small creature over.
"Well hello there little one," Volldai said, "you
want some of my fruit?" Volldai clipped a small bit of fruit off of the
whole and laid it on his thigh. The lizard quickly scampered down
his chest and onto his leg, nibbling on the the food.
"My, you are rather intelligent for a small thing,
aren't you." The lizard looked up at the knight. It wasn't too much
of an impressive creature, but it seemed rather strong for its size.
Its' skin was rough, green, with small brown specks all over. Its' tail
was prehensile, and it seemed to eat much like a raccoon, holding its food
in its claws above the ground, bringing it to its mouth. The whole
thing was no longer than ten inches. Volldai lowered his hand slowly
to
the lizard, and the lizard hopped onto it.
"You're not very afraid of me, are you? Maybe you
aren't as intelligent as I thought," Volldai chuckled. The lizard
looked at him and cocked its head. "Worry not, little one. You're
much too small for me to worry about, you're safe from my blade. But
for now, its bed time." Volldai lifted his hand near the trunk of
the tree, and the lizard hopped off. He didn't know why he had been
so friendly to the creature, something about this island certainly was different.
Maybe something was effecting him, he thought. He looked down at his
hands, sparkling with what looked to be some of the purple powder from the
Slinger's vines. Interesting, Volldai thought.
Volldai slowly laid down under his makeshift tent,
and closed his eyes. This would be a very long and interesting journey.
