Glossary of Terms
used throughout Kahlan

Axe of Sin - axe used by Villious.  This magical halberd is razor sharp and light, making it easy to handle with one hand.  However it's true power is it's ability to create wounds that will not heal or stop bleeding.  Only by magic can one survive a successful blow by this weapon.

Chaos Blade Nidhogg - legendary blade carried by Nightsword.  It is a soul blade, a sword that when it hits an opponent, drains a small bit of energy, and gives it to whoever wields it.  Nidhogg is also embued with a combination of fire and wind, allowing it to summon great tornadoes of fire.

Chivalry - the spirit or character of the ideal knight.

Dragon Crest Knights - an order of knights formed by Daravon during the early part of the Thirty Years War.  This
order has had a history of being composed of overzealous and particularly cruel knights.  They are primarily used as the main fighting group of the Ikros Legions.  All Dragon Crest Knights are mounted and most carry magical weapons.

Dragon Maw Battalion - a group of melee foot soldiers founded by Daravon.  Composed of mainly archers, this group of soldiers were used as cover fire for the Dragon Crest Knights.  The Dragon Maw are equipped with chain or light plate mail making them quick to move on the field of battle.

Dragoon - a powerful knight with magical abilities.  Most dragoons have magically increased speed and agility.

Lion's Claw Battalion - a group of melee foot soldiers founded by Ulmerad.  This group is mainly equipped with battle axes, and are used as the main attack force against enemy troops.  Relatively fast, these soldiers are protected by light plate mail.

Holy Light - mystical sword carried by Ulmerad.  Embued with the power of creation, this blade is an ally of the light.  It has the ability to see other places far away, and is indestructible.  Because of its' power of the light, it is best used against the dark and the weaker forces of the light.  It cannot harm the strong forces of the light.

Horde, the - the name given to Ethelred's forces of the undead.

Ikros - a country within Kahlan ruled by Ulmerad.

Ikros Legions - the collective name for all troops under King Ulmerad.  This include the Dragon Crest Knights, the
Knights of the Lion's Crest, the Raven's Wing Battalion, the Griffin's Claw Battalion, the Dragon Maw Battalion, and the Royal Guard.

Kahlan - The continent on which our story takes place.

Knights of the Lion's Crest -  an order of knights formed by Ulmerad during the early part of the Thirty Years War.
The Lion's Crest is mainly composed of the most skilled and battle hardened troops of the Ikros Legions.  They are used as the main reinforcing and command group.  All Lion's Crest are mounted and most carry magical weapons.

Melee Soldier - Soldiers trained in hand to hand combat techniques.

Necromancer - a person who uses Necromancy.

Necromancy - a form of magic involving the reanimation or use of the dead and spirits.  This form of magic has always been
held in the realms of taboo among the people of Kahlan.

of the Earth - a title given to a weapon imbued with the power of earth.  Weapons of this type are typically stronger and more durable than normal weapons.  These weapons are also heavier, and strike with a harder blow.  Certain weapons of this type can also call forth minor earthquakes and fissures to use against an enemy.

of the Flame - a title given to a weapon imbued with the power of fire.  Weapons of this type have a typically sharper blade.  They also are warm to the touch, and with every hit they temporarily heat up further, until they are able to slice through armor like butter.  Certain weapons of this type can also be used to create walls of fire or fire balls to block off or attack an enemy.

of the Water - a title given to a weapon imbued with the power of water.  Weapons of this type have a harder surface to them, and tend to be cold to the touch.  The more they are in battle, the more temporarily colder they become, until they have the power to freeze any moist object they come in contact with.  Certain weapons of this type have been known to be able to summon blasts of water to push back enemies, or create huge walls of water to slow them down.

of the Wind - a title given to a weapon imbued with the power of air.  Weapons of this type move faster through the air, as they have very little wind resistance.  They are also typically lighter weapons, allowing them to be swung with great speed.  Certain weapons of this type have the ability to summon small vortices or bolts of lightning to attack enemies.

Order of Huldrain - group of paladins from the land of Karkos.  Lead by their leader, Jerren, they roam the land destroying all signs of the Horde by any means necessary.

Paladin - holy knight with magical abilities.  Most paladins have the ability to heal wounds by touch.

Storm Crow Battalion - a group of melee foot soldiers founded during the partnership between Ulmerad and Daravon.  These soldiers are mainly spearmen, used in defense against enemy cavalry.  Armed in heavy plate mail, these troops are slow but well defended.

Royal Guard - the group of melee foot soldiers founded to protect Ulmerad's various castles and keeps.  They are heavily armored and carry a variety of weapons, and all members are highly skilled.

Siege - an attack upon a fortified place.  Most sieges are nothing more than a waiting game, blocking off supplies to the enemy, until they are too hungry or weak and give up.

Siege Engine - large machines designed to aid an army in battle, usually during the siege of a castle.  Examples include catapults, ballistia, and battering rams.  Such machines are typically very large and heavy, slow to move, and take many days to build.  However, to destroy such a beast is a hard task.  Catapults and ballistia are usually out of range for any archer armed with a flaming arrow to hit, and battering rams are usually too heavily armored.

Shadow Wolves - the group of mercenaries lead by Skoll.  They have a deep history of foul play and trickery.  They are as greedy as they are spineless.

Sword of the Ancients - legendary blade carried by Trouble.  As it's name implies, this sword is an ancient relic, with powers like few ever seen.  It amplifies and projects the power of the soul that wields it.  In the hands of an undead knight, it spews forth great amounts of dark energy, cutting down all but the most powerful of opponents.

Terror Shadow - mystical sword carried by Daravon.  Embued with the powers of destruction, the powers of the dark flow through this blade.  It has the ability to read the minds and souls of people, and cannot be destroyed.  It's blade is best used against the powers of the light and the weaker powers of the dark.  It has no effect on the stronger powers of the dark.

Undead - term used to describe the reanimated bodies or the spirits of the dead living on earth.

Wraith - an undead spirit raised to serve its master.  Unlike a zombie, wraiths have very little physical form.  Their heads are usually nothing but a dense mass of air or black smoke.  Wraiths are very quick and strong, but they are very vulnerable to sharp weapons, unlike their zombie and skeleton counterparts.
