The Arrival
an illustrated tale
page 2

What Garalt saw next was truly shocking to him.  Through the portal walked Sir Liphon followed by Sir Wiegar.  It seemed possible, though it never occurred to him that Liphon would have any knowledge on how to enter the tower.  Garalt decided to address the two, but before he could Wiegar began to speak.
"Remind me again why we have to return to this odd tower Liphon."
"Return to the tower...?" Garalt whispered.
"It's quite simple Wiegar.  You and I both saw the clouds around the tower.  We must know if someone is interfering with our plan."  Liphon said with an air of frustration.
"Yes, but the clouds are gone, and there is noone here."
"Nevertheless, he would be very upset if anyone decided to interfere with the plan, never mind discover it."
"I can't wait till Ulmerad is taken care of, I'm sick of taking his orders."
"It's only a matter of time my friend."
"VILE TRAITORS!!"  Garalt shouted, jumping off the lookout tower and landing before the two knights.  Greylen and Demonclaw slowly walked out of their hiding places and stood behind the young knight.

"Well, well, seems the tower has mice, Wiegar," Liphon spoke, somewhat amused.  Wiegar chuckled softly.
"What are you planning you black hearted, vile..."
"Mice with tempers," Liphon interrupted.  Garalt clenched his teeth in disgust.  "And where is the man with your leash, young knight?  Where is your Kullvox?"
"Killed by a dragon..." Garalt sighed, looking for a moment at the ground.
"Aww... that IS a shame, young knight, I did so like the man.  But, at least this way I won't have to feel bad about killing him, since our dragon was kind enough to take care of him for us.  Wiegar, you can cross that off our 'to-do' list."
Wiegar laughed heartily, slapping his hand against his thigh.
"'OUR DRAGON?'  What do you mean by that?!" Demonclaw demanded.
"Oops... did I say too much?" Liphon smiled.  "Very well, since you already know as much as you do, I'll tell you a little secret.  Greylen, do you remember that little inscription you read downstairs?"
    Greylen nodded slowly.

"Maybe next time," Liphon continued, "you could translate them correctly.  That dragon in that cave is not what awakens the power of this tower."
"Then what is it?" Greylen asked softly.
"This tower was built to keep that dragon asleep for all eternity.  With a little help, I was able to awaken the power of the dragon, and now we have control over the ultimate power in all of Kahlan!"
"Murderer!!!  You killed Kullvox!"  Garalt almost fell to his knees.
"So you're going to use the dragon to overthrow King Ulmerad and place yourself as the new ruler, huh?" Demonclaw snapped.
"Me?  No, I'm no ruler, but I will control the dragon to ensure my survival."
"What's so special about THAT dragon, dragons get killed by other dragons all the time," Greylen questioned the elder mage.
"Ahh, but you see, our dragon is truly special, for she is the first dragon to be born on earth!  Her name is Tel'Karak Zrahl!"
"The death wind..." Greylen whispered to himself.
"At least you know a little of the old language, you pathetic fool."
Garalt felt a cold breeze beginning to blow over them, and with it came a smile to Liphon's face.
"Ahh..." Liphon smiled all the more, "she's here."
