The Arrival
an illustrated tale
page 3

Much like a horrible dream, Garalt was once again staring straight into the terrible visage that was the dragon that took the life of his friend.  It's head slowly rose up from behind the tower, until it loomed over the group like some dark cloud.  Liphon looked over the three terrified warriors and began to laugh.
"Oh what fun this will be, Wiegar!" Liphon looked at his companion.  Wiegar returned a smile.
"Aye, I'm sure our pet is hungry after her long sleep, and poor Kullvox was only a small snack for her."
"Why yes, I'd say you're right.  Tel' Karak!  Dispatch these three warriors," Liphon ordered, pointing at the three and looking up at the dragon.  Tel'Karak seemed to just stare at Garalt hungrily, and Garalt stared back with sheer contempt.
"Tel'Karak!  Destroy them I say!  I awakened you, you will do as I say!" Liphon ordered all the more loudly.
The black dragon then looked over the five men standing before her, and began to growl at Garalt.  Garalt could feel a large lump start to grow in the depths of his neck.  But Garalt began to notice something odd about the dragon's growl.  It didn't really seem like a growl at all, it was more like a low, deep chuckle.  The dragon was laughing at the mage knight!  Liphon looked up at the dragon in time to see the gaping mouth of the beast open up and scream, picking him up and tossing him into the air like a rag doll.

Liphon landed in the awaiting jaws of the beast, and just as they did with Kullvox, they snapped shut, nearly severing the knight in two.  Liphon let out a tremendous howl of pain, hitting the dragon's nose with his fists over and over.

His body began to convulse as the dragon gently squeezed the mage knight more and more.  And more and more Liphon's screams of pain became louder and louder.
    "Wiegar.... Help me!!"  Liphon gasped.
But the cowardly Wiegar did nothing.  His sword and shield were raised in a defensive stance, but his whole body seemed frozen in fear.  Even the drops of Liphon's blood falling on him did not seem to phase the man.  His mouth was gaped, and he seemed to be screaming, though no sound escaped his lips.  Liphon, on the other hand, was moving desperately in an attempt to free himself, but to no avail.
"Die you vile creature!" Garalt spat at Liphon, "For the death of Kullvox, you have received what you deserve!  May you rot in the bowels of Hell!!"
As if on cue, the dragon lifted its head and swallowed the knight whole.  His hideous screams of pain replaced by the deafening silence of the wind blowing over the top of the tower.  Silently, the dragon moved one of it's hands closer to the terrified Wiegar, and then gently, she picked up the knight.  She seemed to study him, looking him over carefully, and then looking over Garalt and his companions in the same way.  Wiegar seemed to still be totally frozen in fear, and by now had dropped his weapons, allowing them to fall to the ground below.
