War's End
an illustrated tale
page 1

"YAH!" a voice called out.  The horse instinctively began to charge.  The two knights lifted their lances high into the air, aiming the other down.  The horses charged across the sandy soil of the tournament grounds with lightning speed.  It had all come down to this, now, the final match of the tournament.  A contest between a knight of the realm and a relatively unknown prince.  Each had defeated their previous opponents, each had proven their worth.  And now, as they rode through the arena, once more their skills would be tested.  It was a beautiful day in Ikros, the sun was shining brightly, only a few fluffy clounds dotted the rich blue sky.  A soft breeze carried the scent of grass and pine sap across the fields.  The horses they rode left a soft cloud of dust behind them, galloping to their body's limit.  The crowds cheered on as the two knights rode, their calls of encouragement for their favorite fighter traveling far across the countryside.
With a thunderous sound, the two knights made contact.  Cheers came up from the crowd as the lances slammed into the shields of the opponents.  The king, along with his court, watched in baited breath from the royal box.  Ikros needed this celebration of peace.  Even the foreign kings had been invited to take part in the festivities.  Though it had been four months since the end of the war between Ikros and the Council, Ikros still needed much work.  It's towns and villages still lay asunder, life was only beginning to return to normal for the peace loving people of Ikros.  But in order to boost the morale of the soldiers, as well as the spirits of the people, King Ulmerad decided to host a tournament of knights.  All the best warriors from Kahlan converged upon the fair grounds and did battle with each other in one on one contests.  This was the final duel of the week long event, and it was beginning to turn out to be one of the most exciting.
