Fall from Grace

"It is just as the scrolls said it would be... Demonclaw, look!" Greylen was almost mesmerized by the sight.
"We've done it my friend!" Demonclaw happily proclaimed.
The whole group began to fan out among the grounds, looking at all that there was to see.  There, on a large stone field, stood a magnificent tower held aloft by seven pillars and an odd looking structure.  Surrounding the tower were six, brightly colored spires of odd and fantastic shapes.  Garalt couldn't believe that all this was there and no one had yet found it.

"So, Greylen, tell us about this place," Garn questioned the wizard loudly.
"Certainly," Greylen said, still walking toward the tower, and was now walking up the stairs to the main platform.  "The Tower of Olyian sits upon a great focal point for magic.  Magic flows through the earth like water flows about the ground, and in some places it gathers, like here.  When you have such a place, you can do fantastic things.  Olyian knew this, and built his tower here.  One of the first things you probably have noticed are the six spires.  Each one represents the six basic types of magic: Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Creation and Destruction.  The spires are colored and shaped to roughly give the impression of which they are."

"As for the tower itself," Greylen continued, "it sits upon this stone altar.  In order for the powers of the tower to have the greatest effect, Olyian was forced to make the tower as magically neutral as possible, thus the gray color and relatively straight sides."
"What's that odd thing in the center, underneath the tower?" asked Rikio.
"One of the greatest assets of the tower," the mage said happily, "you couldn't ask for a better secure front door.  This 'odd' circular structure is a portal.  It can only be activated by those with magical abilities, and is the only way to get inside the tower.  In fact, it is said, that the entire tower lacks any doors, ladders or stairs of any sort, and only by activating these portals can you get anywhere.  Supposedly, on the roof of the tower lies something even more incredible."
    "What's that?" Kullvox asked.
"The Master Portal," Demonclaw chimed in.
"The Master what?" Ceness seemed very confused at this point.
"The Master Portal," Greylen said slowly, "the whole reason Demonclaw and I have been searching for the tower.  The Master Portal is an artifact from long ago, and according to legend it can transport you to any moment, any place in time and space.  We won't know if its really here till we go in.  Speaking of which, if you'll all gather near the portal I'll show you how it works."

Within moments the entire group was gathered around the portal gate.  Garalt couldn't see anything special about it, but Greylen seemed to be able to read it as if it were some great scroll of knowledge.  Greylen closed his eyes and began to chant softly to himself.  And then, his words became louder and he lifted his staff.
"Tower of Olyian, grant us entrance, open your doors to us..."
And with a great explosion of light, what looked like a shining pool of water up on end appeared in the portal.  It was met with a universal gasp of amazement from the whole group, save Greylen.  The portal was alive with energy, and the pool of water seemed to ripple with the slightest breeze.  Greylen looked about the group with pride.
"Shall we?" was all he said.
