"Lord Ulmerad," a voice nearby said.
Ulmerad and Garalt turned to see Emperor Shau and the other three kings
that had been at the battle against the Council. Daravon, Alyia and
Queen Alamir soon joined Ulmerad and Garalt upon the arena floor.
"We have one final event to close out your wonderful
celebration," King Viriliab added.
"Oh?" Ulmerad said, looking at Alamir and back at the
four rulers, "I was unaware of any other planned events."
"We have something to present to you, Lord Ulmerad,"
King Ollan said, motioning to guards to move forward. The two
were carrying a very large, and obviously very heavy chest, and they quickly
delivered it to Ulmerad's feet. Emperor Shau opened the chest from
behind and revealed it's contents to Ulmerad.
Garalt could see nothing but a pile of
oversized keys within the chest, and it confused him a bit. Ulmerad
leaned down and picked up one of the keys, examining it.
"It has been several months since your victory over the
Council, Lord Ulmerad," Emperor Shau said formally. "However, our peoples
have either moved on or are in hiding still. Most who have moved on
have entered into Ikros to seek your protection, and now we do as well."
"Each one of those keys represent each of the other sovereign
nations of Kahlan," King Viriliab continued, "the four golden keys represent
our realms. The others represent those nations who's rulers were regrettably
destroyed at the Council's hand. We present them to you, as well as
ourselves."
"We submit our people and our lands to Ikros, Lord Ulmerad,"
Ollan said with a smile, "we entrust our lands to you."
"I am humbled by your decisions," Ulmerad said, shocked,
"but at the same time, I understand it as well. I humbly accept this
gift and responsibility." The five kings bowed to each other, and with
that gesture, four of them gave up their rights to that title.
"Let all of Kahlan be united once more, just as in the
days of old!" Viriliab called out. The gathered crowd cheered and called
out to the five rulers, approving of the action.
"Kahlan is united once more, and under
the Ikros flag," Ulmerad addressed the crowd. "We are all one people once
more. But there is still plenty of work to do. The hiding peoples
of the new territories must be brought out and be reassured that the terror
is over. Our cities must be rebuilt, and fields replanted. Let
Ikros be strong once more! Go forth and spread the news, peace is here
at last! Let no foreign power ever threaten Ikros again!" Once
again the crowd cheered on their monarch. Garalt was impressed with
the way the people revered their King. Ulmerad was such a strong ruler,
and always seemed to know exactly the best thing to do. The crowd soon
departed, as well as the former kings. Now only a few guards, Ulmerad,
Daravon, Alamir, Garalt, and Alyia remained. Drakon, Greylen, Demonclaw,
Kullvox, and the now fully recoverd Garn, who had been in the crowd, stayed
behind as well, joining the group in the arena.
