The Siege
of Halcyon Castle
an illustrated tale
page 3
However, the commotion outside the castle did not
go unnoticed, and soon the portcullis and the drawbridge began to close
the castle off to the outside world. The two guards and the two knights
arrived a moment too late, and were trapped on the lead bridge.

"Damn!" Garalt grunted, hitting his axe on the floor
of the bridge.
"What'll we do?" "Why is this happening?"
The two guards began to babble, frightened to no end.
"Look, Garalt!" Kullvox said with some excitement,
as Durall, Jooret and Lahg, the three mercenaries stepped up to take on
the necromancer directly.
"They certainly are brave," Garalt whispered to
himself.
"This ends now Ethelred!" Durall comanded. Ethelred
slowly smiled at the three men standing before him. Then he began
to laugh. A hideous, deep, slow laughter. Garalt recognized
it instantly. He didn't know from where or when, but he knew it like
his mother's voice. Before they could react, Ethelred raised his
arm and cast a spell.
In an instant, he summoned an undead spirit before the
three mercenaries. Suddenly they were on the ground, unmoving, Garalt
could not tell if they were still alive. The spirit charged the four
men on the bridge, and then passed completely through them.
"Fear not young knight," Kullvox spoke slowly, "ghosts
cannot harm the living, they can only push unliving objects around."
"But what about Durall and his men?" Garalt questioned.
"I don't know Garalt..."
