The Paladins of Karkos
an illustrated tale
page 1

Garalt found himself locked in chains, in the dark.  The smell of death stinging his senses.  Everything around him was pitch black, just a small haze of light seemed to glow in the distance.  His arms were stretched out above him as he hung from some unknown ceiling.  The air was heavy and moist, sweat on his skin just seemed to stick to him.
There, in the distance in front of him, Garalt could just make out a figure walking towards him.  As the figure came ever closer, light seemed to follow him.  Garalt called out.  No words came from the figure.  It just kept walking closer and closer.
A torch in the distance exploded to life, burning brightly, stinging the young knight's eyes.
    Another.
The figure was now very well backlit.  Garalt could finally make out a person dressed in a black cloak.  He was walking slowly toward him, not making any sound at all.
Torches now began to light the room where he was.  The light revealed mounds upon mounds of bones stacked all around him, bodies hanging from the stone walls and ceiling.  Garalt cringed at the sight.  His bowels churned at it all.
The figure reached Garalt and looked up at him.  The young knight screamed in horror as he saw the face of the person standing before him.

"ETHELRED!!" Garalt cried out, struggling hard to free himself.  Ethelred just smiled and began to laugh.  Evil, vile laughter.  It filled the room, it echoed off the wall.  It almost became deafening.  Ethelred waved his hand at the piles of bones, and as his hand moved towards them, the bones began to move on their own.  The began to put themselves together, living skeletons began to take shape all around.  Hundreds of them, standing all around Garalt.  They began to attack him, clawing at his flesh, tearing at his skin.  Garalt screamed in agony as he was attacked, being ripped limb from limb.
