The Paladin Way
an illustrated tale
page 3

"Kullvox, I don't want to fight you!" Garalt said quickly, backing up towards the rear of the church.  Kullvox began to slowly walk towards the young knight.  Garalt slowly inched his way around the well, making sure the well stood between him and the elder knight.
"You never were a good squire, Whelp," Kullvox said slowly, "my boots were never as shiny as Haleron's were because of you!"
"What??  What ARE you talking about?"
"All of Haleron's squires were much more willing to learn, all you wanted to do was mouth off."
"You did a lot of mouthing yourself there, buddy."
"The Garalt I knew was never this cowardly," Kullvox said, still walking after the retreating Garalt, "I guess I'll have to beat some bravery into you!"
Kullvox lunged at Garalt, who blocked with his shield quickly.
"I do not want to fight you!" Garalt yelled at the knight.
"If you do not fight me, I shall finish you!"
Lunge after lunge, Kullvox beat Garalt back around the church.  With every blow Kullvox' magical mace became more and more cold, and Garalt knew that if he didn't do something soon, that mace would shatter his shield.  Garalt did not want to fight his former master, his heart already hung heavy for his death, and to have to finish him would break his heart.  Garalt backed off from the advancing knight and then charged.  With his only weapon being his cane, Garalt knew he would have to get in a perfect hit to knock the elder knight off balance.

Garalt Charged the elder knight with all his strength and landed a direct blow to the knight's chest.  Kullvox fell backward against the well and remained motionless.  Garalt began to hear a soft moaning from Kullvox.
"Come on," Garalt said nervously, "I didn't hit you near that hard..."
"V... Vanquish me..." Kullvox said weekly.
"Never!  You of all people told me I should show mercy to all."
"Vanquish me... Garalt... let me rest..."
Tears welled up in Garalt's eyes as he raised the slightly pointed end of his cane in the air.  Kullvox' visor slowly lifted and revealed the face of his former master.  He was smiling gently at the young knight.  With all his might, Garalt thrust his cane into the elder knight's neck.  Instantly Kullvox disappeared in a flash of light.
Garalt fell to his knees and wept.
