A Soldier Reborn
an illustrated tale
page 1

Garalt slowly put on the paladin armor that Garn handed him.  The fit was good, and much more light weight then he remembered his old armor being.  Garalt then took from Moraine a paladin sword.  Walking a slight distance from the group, Garalt began to test out his movement in his new armor and with his new sword.  They were going to work well.
"Garalt, you look stunning!" Alyia smiled.
"Yes, but there's still something missing." Garalt said, looking himself over.
"Aye," Garn added, "a helm.  But since you're not a member of the Order of Huldrain, you cannot wear one of ours."
"That will be all right, Garn, I have brought my own."
"What?" Alyia said, looking at Tundrock.  The giant of a knight just shrugged.
"I obtained it a few weeks ago in a forest not far from my home town.  I gave it to one of your men to keep safe, Tundrock."  Garalt answered, motioning for one of the Storm Crow knights to come to him.  The knight walked forward, carrying something in what looked to be a burlap sack.
"You mean those aren't rations you've been lugging around soldier?" Tundrock said, shocked.  Garalt removed a black cape from the bag and slowly put it on.  Next he took the sack from the knight and faced away from the rest of the group.  Slowly, Garalt put on what he removed from the sack.
    "BLASPHEMER!!" Moraine shouted angrily.
"Garalt, why do you dishonor us with this display of contempt?!" Garn growled.
"I am sorry Garn, but I wear this helm for it is who I am.  I am a dragoon.  I am a paladin.  I am both."
"How can you have taken advantage of us this way??  How can you dishonor the memory of your mother?  She would have NEVER accepted this." Moraine and Garn both drew their swords.  Tundrock readied his hammer to defend the princess.
"But she did, Moraine," Garalt said, turning around to face the two enraged paladins. "My mother was Lady Kiana Di'Anlan, a Paladin of Huldrain.  My father was Garadaine the Cleaver, a Triark Dragoon.  I am the product of their undying love for each other."
"Abomination!!" Moraine shouted, backing away from the group, his sword pointing at Garalt.  "It is no wonder Lady Kiana left without a word, she knew she was carrying evil's child in her womb!!"
"Moraine," Garn said slowly, "Lady Kiana was a great woman, and look at what this abomination is.  Garalt has become an incredibly gifted warrior, one blessed with the best qualities of both societies with none of their bias."
"So you support this creature?!" Moraine snapped, "Very well, go with him, you are no longer welcome in this land, nor is the thing at your side!"
Garn shook his head slowly.  Garalt looked at Alyia and then turned around, walking away from the ruined city and back to Ikros.
