The Jackal's Redemption
an illustrated tale
page 2

The two knight's banter was interrupted by a great and fiery explosion.  The huge Venorian had been hit by a powerful fireball from no where.
"You two!" someone shouted, "Get that stone out of here!"
Garalt was shocked to see that all seven Jackals were attacking the group of creatures, albeit very relieved.

The Jackal mage began to throw fireball after fireball at the huge Venorian.  The creature was totally stunned by this new attack, and let the Crimson Jackal slip right between his legs and at the head Venorian.  The creature called out in terror as the Crimson Jackal's blade sliced the small beast in two.
Garalt looked behind him and saw Sir Hillsbrad, his former teacher, fighting along side the black Jackal.  The two fighters had made a swath through the Venorians, and were directing the two knights with the stone out of harm's way.
"Hillsbrad!  Am I glad to see you!" Garalt cheered, whacking a Venorian hard with his shield.
"No time for that Garalt!  Help us get this stone out of here, we'll explain things later!"
"You don't have to tell me twice!"

Garn and Tundrock began to quickly carry the activation stone out of the fray, while Drakon and Garalt worked their way between them and the Venorians. The pair began to let all their reservations slip, and took down all the Venorians they could. Garalt could feel the odd blue colored blood of the creatures splashing upon his body, and the screams of wounded and dying Venorians filled his ears. Garalt winced and continued to attack the creatures, fighting back tears against this slaughter. These creatures were only protecting their way of life, just like Garalt was against the great dragon.
"Damn you simple creatures!" Garalt shouted, cutting down Venorians one by one, "If only you know what we were trying to do for you!  Don't you know that the dragon will come for you if we don't stop her?!"  Garalt felt all the sensation of the battle leave him.  He could no longer feel his fingers, the ground.  It was as if he wasn't even there any more.

The gargantuan Venorian's screams of anger broke Garalt's blind rage enough for him to see the Jackal mage be cut down by the creature's huge hands.  The Blue Jackal called out in sorrow and began to beat the creature's hands over and over.  The Crimson Jackal was not fairing too much better.  After cutting down the Venorian leader, all the nearby creatures began to swarm the man, and nothing he could do seemed to be able to make them back away.  One of the creatures caught hold of the Crimson Jackal's sword arm and held it fast.
"Hillsbrad!  Golan!  Get Garalt and Drakon out of here!  We'll hold them off as long as we can!"
Garalt felt a hand on his shoulder.  Looking over he saw the armored face of Hillsbrad, the knight was pulling on him, motioning him to flee.  Garalt nodded and began to run.
As he began to run, Garalt took one last look behind him.  The white, red, blue and Crimson Jackals were being totally swarmed.  The Venorians seemed to no longer morn the loss of their activation stone, but now were out for revenge for the loss of their brothers.  Just as they disappeared from his view, Garalt saw the Venorians totally surround the poor men.
    "God's speed..." Garalt whispered.
