The Search for the Stone
an illustrated tale
page 1

The full moon shown brightly that night, bathing everything in an eerie blue haze.  It had been decided to make the final assault on the Venorian stronghold on a night like this, as the Venorians are usually rather sluggish at night.  Though no one knew just where the creatures of the forest kept their valuable activation stone, finding it was too important to wait any longer.  Garalt, Drakon, Garn and Tundrock had set off earlier that day to search for the Venorian's hiding place and, after finding a well worn path, had been following it for several hours.

"We sure don't blend in too well with the moon shining as bright as it is..." Drakon said slowly.  Garalt stopped and turned around, looking at his friends.
"True, but the elves told us that the Venorians would be less active at night.  We'll have to hope that tonight is no exception."  Garalt looked himself over, he stuck out like a sore thumb, what with his highly reflective armor and sword.
"Jus' so long as I get ta' hit somethin' over it's scaly head, I'll be all right," Tundrock said with a smile, shaking his war hammer.
"You'll get your chance, I'm sure," Drakon smiled.
"Well, the way I see it," Garn broke in, "We either stay here the night or we keep going.  So the question is, do we want to rest or not.  After all, we've been hiking all day."
"Very true," Garalt said, "but we can't lose the advantage of night, if the Venorians truly are day creatures."
    "Agreed," Drakon said.
The four marched onward, walking for another hour.  It wasn't long before they crested a hill and discovered themselves above a small group of Venorians.
"Five of them," Garalt said to himself.
"Look at that strange chest they're standing around," Garn whispered.
"Could the stone be in there?" Tundrock asked softly.
"No, I don't think so, the activation stone would be much too..." Drakon stopped.
    "...they see us..." Garalt whispered.
