The Search for the Stone
an illustrated tale
page 3

A flash of light appeared in front of him, Garalt jumped slightly.  Within his hand, surround with some mysterious dark aura, was a broadsword, black as night.

Garalt gazed at the sword carefully, not believing it was there.  As it moved through the air, the strange aura seemed to linger, leaving a trail of what almost looked like dark smoke.
    "My word..." Garn gasped.
"Are you all right boy?" Tundrock asked timidly.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Garalt smiled, swinging the sword through the air quickly.
"It's an amazing blade," Drakon said to himself.
"Yeah, I wonder just what it's capable of," Garalt said, continuing to make the sword leave its dark trail through the air.
"We'll figure that out later," Garn said, "we've still got a stone to find."
"Yes," Drakon said.  The four began to walk on, still following the path they had been following earlier that day.  The moon still shone brightly in the night sky, and now that it was directly overhead, it almost seemed like daylight.
The trail lead them into a very rocky area of the forest, with a tight bend near a tall fir tree.  Garalt stopped and peered around the bend.  Without a word, he raised his hand and stopped the other three, pointing at what he saw.
There it was, with only four Venorians around it.  The massive activation stone.  It was glowing bright blue, and Garalt couldn't tell if the humming he was hearing was coming from the stone or the Venorians worshiping the stone.
"all right, this is where it gets ugly," Garalt whispered.
"What do you mean?" Tundrock asked.
"What, did you think the Venorians would just GIVE us their holy relic?" Drakon responded.
"Yes, it is regrettable, but it's something we've simply got to do," Garn said slowly.
"If it must be..." Tundock said sadly.
